XBMC on the Intel NUC DN2820FYKH

I decided to try using XBMC on the NUC DN2820FYKH to see how it would perform as a media PC. I just burned an ISO of XBMCuntu to a USB (using dd, Startup Disk Creator didn’t want to work for me) and just booted it in the NUC. It took a while to boot, probably due to the speed of the USB stick, but once it was booted it was fast and responsive.

I used several different file types, mainly 1080p H.264 files, and they all played perfectly, registering zero dropped frames (the information overlay can be accessed by pressing “i” or “o” on the keyboard.

I also tried a 720p file that I had that can reach well over 100Mbps, and I was very surprised to see that play back flawlessly over the network. Even VLC on my six-core desktop can struggle a bit!

Anyway, the NUC handled all the video files that I threw at it with ease. It will make an excellent HTPC when I have retired it’s server uses!
